MCEF NAMES NOVEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

RECOGNITION CELEBRATES TOP-PERFORMING CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS

PEARL ― The Mississippi Construction Education Foundation is recognizing four career and technical education standouts as its students of the month for November.

Selected from MCEF’s four districts are Greg Beemon of Multicraft Academy, Anthony Melton, Jr. of Greene County Vocational Technical Center, John Oglesby of Tupelo Career Technical Center, and Brady Pope of Philadelphia Neshoba County Career Technical Center.

Winners are chosen based on grades, attendance, discipline in class, outstanding achievements, leadership abilities, and post-graduation plans. All will compete for student of the year honors at the foundation’s annual awards program next May.

“We congratulate our student of the month winners for being such excellent representatives of high school career tech programs in Mississippi,” said Mike Barkett, MCEF president. “We’re proud of each of them for helping ensure our state has a highly skilled workforce to support the state’s growing construction and manufacturing industries.”

Touting a perfect grade point average and attendance record, Beemon leads by example with a willingness to go the extra mile with anyone who needs help. An 11th grader at Pelahatchie High School, he is a member of the Student Council, Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. While his future plans are uncertain, Beemon is considering a career as a football coach or career tech instructor.

Melton serves as an officer for his SkillsUSA and FFA chapters. A nominee for the Greene County High School Hall of Fame 2019, he is the recipient of the FFA Chapter and Greenhand Degree, his NCCER certification, and the Safety Award at the 2018 Building Futures Summer Camp. Melton plans to boost his construction training through military service, eventually earning a degree in construction management from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Praised by instructors for his impressive desire to learn, Oglesby is currently taking two career classes in order to enhance his welding and automotive skills. His efforts earned him recognition as the welding student of the month and a top-quadrant score on the career planning and assessment test. Oglesby’s career goals include applying his CTE skills as the owner of an automotive shop.

Recognized for his energetic nature and leadership skills, Pope is recipient of the Star Student Award and serves as president of his local SkillsUSA. His work products reflect significant quality and knowledge as evidenced by his impressive performances at the 2018 district and state welding fabrication competitions. Pope plans to study welding at East Central Community College in preparation for a career as a welder on an offshore drilling rig or pipeline.

MCEF is a non-profit educational foundation that provides NCCER craft training and credentialing in more than 100 career and technical programs across the state. The foundation’s mission is to train individuals for the construction and manufacturing industries in Mississippi.

MCEF also offers workforce training and credentialing in construction, industrial maintenance and manufacturing trades.
